TERFEL URDD GOBAITH CYMRU SCHOLARSHIP
Following the success of Urdd Gobaith Cymru’s National Eisteddfod
this year, eight of Wales’ most talented youth will compete for the
Bryn Terfel Urdd Gobaith Cymru Scholarship on Friday evening,
September 16. The evening will be held at Galeri, Caernarfon at 7.00
pm and will be broadcasted live on S4C.
The Scholarship is worth £4,000. Competing this year will be Nerys
Alwena Brown from Caersws, the winner of the 19-25 year old solo at
the Eisteddfod, Catrin Evans from Llanfaircaereinion (19-25 solo
recitation), Glesni Fflur Evans, Bala (19-25 year old cerdd dant
solo), Glian Llwyd, Bala (instrumental solo 19-25 year old), Gregory
Veary-Roberts, Aberystwyth (folk song solo), Lowri Walton, Cardiff
(individual folk dance 15-25 years old), Carwyn James, Carmarthen,
theatrical presentation (14-25 years old).
In a new development this year all eight of the young performers
took master classes organised by the Urdd which were held at Faenol
Hall during the National Eisteddfod week. The Master Classes were
held by some of Wales’ most prominent performers, and the eight
competing for the Scholarship received expert tuition and advice.
The adjudicators are Miriam Bowen - famous soprano who now teaches
at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff; Sioned
Huws - cerographist who lives in Belgium and works in both Britain
and Europe; Nia Clwyd - singer and former Eisteddfod winner who
teaches many Eisteddfod competitors and conductor of Carmarthen's
Bois y Castell choir; Terence Lloyd - musician, conductor, pianist
and former music teacher; Rhondda born Daniel Evans - a well known
face on the Eisteddfod stage, as well as in London and Stratford's
theatres, and the world famous actress Siân Phillips.
Bryn Terfel says:
“The Urdd fosters Wales’ young talent, and this years’ Master
Classes will give the young winners a chance to perfect their
performances for the scholarship. I’m extremely happy to see the
scholarship going from strength to strength and developing further
this year.”
The evening is sponsored for the second time by Principality, Wales’
largest building society.
Peter Griffiths, Chief Executive of the Principality says:
“As a Welsh building society, we recognise the importance of the
Urdd’s work developing the talent and confidence of Wales’ youth. We
are delighted that our financial support can ensure that the Urdd
can stage a fantastic evening of entertainment as well as giving
competitors a chance to take advantage of the expertise of some of
Wales’ stars. Our relationship with the Urdd also indicates our
support for the Welsh language. This was recently acknowledged as we
reached the short list in the bilingual company of the year
competition 2005.”
Siân Eirian, Urdd Gobaith Cymru Director of the Eisteddfod and
the Arts says:
“We hope that the innovative plans to develop the Bryn Terfel Urdd
Gobaith Cymru Scholarship will develop the skills and talents of
these young performers even further. I would like to offer my
sincere thanks to Bryn Terfel for his continuous interest in the
work of the Eisteddfod and the Arts.”
During the evening Gwenno Mair Davies will receive crown of the 2005
Urdd National Eisteddfod. Llinos Dafydd yielded the Crown following
the Eisteddfod which was held at Wales Millennium Centre in June.
The Urdd will hold a special ceremony during the evening to honour
Gwenno.
