NEW THEATRE OPPORTUNITIES
Urdd Gobaith Cymru will offer new opportunities in the world of
theatre this year as there will be a change in the nature of the
competitions at the Urdd Eisteddfod.
As the Eisteddfod will be held at Wales Millennium Centre it’s a
fantastic chance to experiment new ideas and new projects during the
Eisteddfod week.
As well as introductory pieces on the traditional stage, the Urdd
will urge groups to stage modern dramas and theatre with
experimental aspects and bodily emphasis.
The Urdd hopes to stage a number of theatrical performances at the
Eisteddfod with the aim of using a wide number of theatre genres,
and to introduce wider ideas than what is usually seen on the
pavilion stage.
These performances will include 35 minutes of theatre on a
traditional stage; short performances of up to 7 minuiteswhich can
involve dances or bodily work in a space that might not be seen as
traditional theatre space.
Jeremy Turner, Chairman of the Drama Panel for Urdd Gobaith Cymru’s
National Eisteddfod said:
“The drama competitions are different to some elements of the more
conventional performing competitions at the Eisteddfod. It is a
fantastic way to hear the voice of young people and a way for them
to introduce new forms and styles of modern performing. This year
the competition aspects were abolished with the aim of attracting
more young people to venture, experiment and to challenge. I am
really looking forward to see their work!”
The theatrical performances will be held at Weston Theatre, Wales
Millennium Centre.
