The winner of the 2006 Bryn Terfel Urdd Gobaith Cymru Scholarship is Rhys Taylor from Aberystwyth. The competition was held tonight at Clwyd Theatr Cymru in Mold, where eight of Wales' young talents competed for the scholarship worth £4,000. 24 year old Rhys won the instrumental solo at the Urdd National Eisteddfod at Denbighshire in May. Last year Rhys won a first class degree in the clarinet at the Royal College of Music in Manchester. Rhys has recently launched his first CD and hopes to become a professional soloist in the future. Rhys says: "My days of competing with the Urdd have come to a perfect finale. It was a pleasure competing this evening against such talented performers. It is an honour to receive an award bearing the name of Bryn Terfel who has contributed so much to the arts in Wales. I will use the prize money to pay for professional tuition." Siān Eirian, Urdd Gobaith Cymru Director of the Eisteddfod and the Arts says: "We enjoyed a feast of talent tonight at the Bryn Terfel Urdd Gobaith Cymru Scholarship and in a brilliant competition it was the clarinetist Rhys Taylor who was awarded the scholarship with glowing commendation from the adjudicator's panel. Once again, tonight is testimony that Urdd Gobaith Cymru is dedicated to developing the talent of Wales' youth. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to Bryn Terfel for his continuous interest in the work of the Eisteddfod and the Urdd."
